Food adhesive labels: regulatory compliance and safety
Food labelling is regulated by EU Regulation 1169/2011, which requires including food name, ingredient list, allergens, net quantity, expiry or best before date, storage conditions, food operator details, country of origin, nutritional information and batch. Food adhesive labels must integrate all this information legibly, with a minimum font size of 1.2 mm (or 0.9 mm on small containers).
Materials used must comply with EU Regulation 1935/2004 on food contact materials: no migration of harmful substances, adhesives specifically formulated for food contact and inks complying with regulation. Common substrates are polypropylene (moisture and cold resistant), polyester (heat resistant for pasteurised products) and paper with barrier varnish for dry products.
